Underground Fuel Tank Replacement | Excavation & Backfill

When McDermott Oil Company and Quik 'N Handi Convenience Stores needed underground fuel tanks replaced at one of their Eastern Iowa locations, they called in a team of regional contractors to get it done — and Gravel Grading & Excavating was proud to be part of the crew.

This compilation shows our role in the project: excavating the existing underground storage tanks, coordinating placement of the new tanks, and backfilling to get the site restored and ready for reopening.

Projects like this one require precision, coordination, and a crew that can work efficiently alongside other contractors on a tight timeline. Every hour the store is closed is revenue lost — so getting in, doing the work right, and getting out fast isn't just good practice. It's the job.

What this project involved:

  • Excavation of existing underground fuel storage tanks — careful removal to avoid damaging surrounding infrastructure

  • New tank placement — coordinating with the project team to set tanks to spec

  • Backfill and site restoration — compacting and finishing the site so surface work could follow without delay

  • Multi-contractor coordination — working alongside regional crews in a tight succession to minimize store downtime

A big thank you to McDermott Oil Company and Quik 'N Handi Convenience Stores for trusting us with this project. We don't take lightly what it means to be called in on commercial work like this — and we're proud to support local Eastern Iowa businesses and the contractors who keep them running.

Based in Cascade, Iowa, Gravel Grading & Excavating handles commercial excavation projects across Eastern Iowa including Dubuque, Delaware, Jones, Jackson, and Buchanan counties.
